Houstonian Hotel Club and Spa

The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa Review

Nestled amid mature oaks and pines, The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa is a historic, Forbes four-star hotel that exudes luxury, elegance, and southern hospitality. The former home of United States President George H.W. Bush, it has Texas ranch decor, upscale amenities, and is set amid 27 wooded acres and lush green grounds. It feels like a secluded retreat miles from the city — yet is in the heart of Houston. It also has one of the finest fitness clubs in the U.S., and a newly renovated spa that is a Zen-like sanctuary.

Explore the woodland grounds on a nature walk, passing monarch butterflies and spotting ruby-throated hummingbirds. Watch rabbits hop along the hotel lawns and go for a leisurely run along the forest jogging path that links up with the Memorial Park trails. The property’s ideal location offers easy access to popular Houston dining, shopping, nightlife, and attractions.

If you would prefer to stay closer to home during your stay, head over to the 175,000 square foot Houstonian Club and experience the world class fitness facility’s weekly classes, gym space, tennis courts and more. For something a little more relaxing, a day at the Trellis Spa could be in order. The extensive spa has indoor and outdoor soaking pools as well as multiple treatment rooms for everything from massages and facials to cutting edge light therapy treatments. Take a break from your relaxing and enjoy a gourmet lunch on the terrace or in the gardens before continuing back inside for even more pampering!

Five Classic Cocktails and Where to Find Them

The cocktail. A central part to today’s social culture. Meeting friends to kick off the weekend? Go get a cocktail. Celebrating a major life event? Go get a cocktail. Had a bad case of “the Mondays”? Definitely, go get a cocktail.

In honor of our own case of “the Mondays”, we’ve put together a list of 5 classic cocktails (though some have a modern flair!) and where to get them.

One: Side Car & Mimosa – Bar Hemingway – Ritz Paris

Three classic cocktails all in one magnificent room! Bar Hemingway in the iconic Ritz Paris has been a favored watering hole for many icons over its 115-year history. Coco Chanel made the pilgrimage down from her suite upstairs, F. Scott Fitzgerald had a favorite table and Ernest Hemingway reportedly liberated the bar from the Nazis at the end of World War II. With this much history in one room, it stands to reason that not one, but two historic cocktails were born in these hallowed halls, both with classic French liquors.

The Cognac based sidecar is the cocktail that Bar Hemingway is known for creating (back when Hemingway was liberating the bar!) at the end of WWII. With Cointreau and lemon juice rounding out the ingredients in this classic, the sidecar is a wonderful way to end the day in Paris.

Looking for something to start your day instead? How about the quintessential brunch beverage, the mimosa? This refreshingly bubbly cocktail with equal parts champagne and orange juice was supposedly first served in the bar in 1925 and continues to be a favorite around the world.

Ready to visit the Ritz Paris for yourself? River Oaks Travel clients receive a guaranteed upgrade at the time of booking, no set check-in/check-out times, daily breakfast, AND private airport transfers with VIP meet and greet!

Two: Rhubarb Gin & Tonic – Vintage Crop – The K Club

The gin & tonic is another classic cocktail enjoyed worldwide, but especially popular in the British Isles and throughout the lands historically part of the British Empire. This famed cocktail originally became popular as a treatment and preventative measure against malaria in the 1700’s but in the last century has become a forgotten favorite. This has all been changing recently though as the G&T has become cool again and many small batch distilleries around the world are creating exceptional gin in much the same way that they made whiskeys a few years ago.

Speaking of small batch, The K Club in Straffan, Ireland has a distillery that is about as small batch as it gets. They produce a rosy blush gin flavored with rhubarb to be served only in their onsite bar, the Vintage Crop. Between the pink gin, the craft tonic and the fresh grapefruit slices that garnishe the drink, this cocktail is not only delicious and refreshing, but beautiful too!

Gin & tonic not quite your style? You can also enjoy a whiskey tasting and “pour your own pint” experience – complimentary as a River Oaks Travel client!

Three: Mai Tai – Tonga Room – Fairmont San Francisco

Mai Tais, the classic cocktail of beach vacations and tropical themed parties world-wide. While it wasn’t invented in San Francisco, one of our favorite places to imbibe this tropically delicious drink is at the Tonga Room in the iconic Fairmont San Francisco. The Tonga Room has been serving thirsty San Franciscans and travelers in its tiki themed bar (including a lagoon and floating stage!) since its renovation from hotel pool to kitschy watering hole in 1945. Even Anthony Bourdain spent time at the Tonga Room and in his typically cynical attitude deemed it “the greatest place in the history of the world.” Belly up to the bar and order yourself a drink, but don’t be alarmed by the tropical storms, they’re just for effect!

Psst – As a Virtuoso agency, we offer all of our clients a $100 food and beverage credit that can be used during your stay. We promise not to judge if you use it all at the Tonga Room!

Four: Singapore Sling – The Long Bar – Raffles Singapore

Our next beguiling beverage takes us back to the British Empire and the early 1900’s, specifically The Long Bar at Raffles Hotel in Singapore. This icon has been hosting travelers to Singapore since 1887 and the bar has been slaking travelers thirst just as long. Raffles has been known as an innovator in Southeast Asia since their inception, they were even the first hotel in the region to have electric lights, and The Long Bar is no exception.

Since under the etiquette rules of the time ladies were not able to drink alcohol in public, bartender Ngiam Tong Boon decided to create a drink that from afar would appear to be simply fruit juice so that his female customers could also enjoy a tipple or two! It (understandably) was an instant success and is even now considered the national drink of Singapore. Next time you’re in the neighborhood make sure to crunch your way across the discarded peanut shells and order one of these classic cocktails for yourself and any ladies with you!

Five: The Five – The Punch Room – London EDITION

Our fifth and final classic cocktail on this list is actually a rotating collection of (not so) classic punches that are arranged based on 5 categories and are served at the aptly named Punch Room in London’s EDITION hotel. While the newest collection is based on the 5 classical elements (earth, air, water, fire and aether) the original iterations of “The Five” were based on the five traditional elements of punch; spirit, water or tea, citrus, sugar and spice. Since each element has several cocktails available, there are around 30 options to try and each is more delicious than the last!

With it’s historic private club vibe and wonderful cocktails, the Punch Room is definitely worth a visit, but make sure you request a reservation since the bar is often full! For a full experience travel with a group of friends and try any of the signature punches as a table drink served from vintage punch bowls.

Getting Restless? Go Domestic! Our 5 Tips for Picking a Domestic Destination

icon

Is anyone else quaran-tired?! As we all grow bored of being stuck at home, we’re seeing more and more travelers reaching out to plan their next getaway.

While it may be a little harder than normal to plan an international trip, our domestic destinations are ready to shine! Until borders reopen and international regulations relax, we expect to see a surge of travelers satisfying their wanderlust by traveling within our beautiful USA.

For those clients who are ready to start traveling ASAP, we’ve put together 5 tips for picking a domestic destination for your next adventure. Have a destination in mind already? Check out our overview of state regulations and openings, plus updates to TSA regulations. You can think of this as your Domestic Travel FAQ!

Make sure you know the requirements for self-quarantine

While many destinations are now allowing travel across their borders, that doesn’t mean that everything will be open. Restaurants, beaches, and attractions in certain places could still be closed, leaving you quarantined in a hotel room instead of your home. Check out our overview below of which states have the most relaxed travel regulations.

Consider choosing a destination with lots of options to get outdoors

Many states and local governments have restrictions in place on restaurants, retail spaces and attractions… but not on the outdoors! Try to pick a domestic destination with lots open parks, beaches or trails and get outside to enjoy the summer sunshine. Our favorites? States like Montana, Colorado, and Utah.

Make sure that the hotel that you choose is fully open

While hotels are starting to reopen their doors to guests, many of them are doing so in stages. Make sure that the hotel you choose has their pools, restaurants and other public spaces open so that you can truly enjoy your getaway. Not sure what will be open or the safety measures in place? Ask your River Oaks Travel Advisor – we’re in constant communication with our hotel partners to give you up-to-date information.

Consider a hotel room with a bit more space

Fine with traveling but want to be sure you’ll have room to breathe? Many of the hotels that we partner with have stunning standalone cottages, cabins, and villas that your advisor can help you book! Not only will you get some extra space (hello social distancing!) but oftentimes these houses have additional amenities such as kitchens or private pools for guests. Some of our favorite hotels for this are Montage Palmetto Bluff, The Resort at Paws Up, and Blackberry Farm!

Know your airline rules

Choosing to fly rather than drive? Make sure to research the airline that you’re flying with so that you know what their requirements are. Some domestic carriers are only requiring passengers to wear a mask while onboard, while others are requiring them even in the gate area. Worried about airports and social distancing? Consider flying private to avoid the crowds and give yourself the most stress-free travel situation possible! Ask us about private jet options for your summer vacation – our travel team can help you determine if it’s a good fit for you.

Our Guide to U.S. Destinations and Their Travel Restrictions:

Now that we’ve given you a few things to think about when choosing a domestic destination for travel this year, let’s take a look at the various destinations and restriction levels. All U.S. states have begun to ease their restrictions on businesses and social activity, but there are a few different levels of openness to consider. In general, there are three restriction levels for travel within the U.S.: Minor, Moderate and Major.

Minor Restrictions:

In states with minor restrictions bars and restaurants, retail spaces, theaters and other public spaces may be open (although they are still practicing social distancing within these spaces). These states generally do not require a self-quarantine period for travelers from out of state.

States with Minor Restrictions: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Moderate Restrictions:

States with moderate restrictions may have restaurants, retail spaces and other personal businesses open but they have more stringent social distancing parameters than states with minor restrictions. These states may require a self-quarantine period for travelers from out of state.

States with Moderate Restrictions: Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.

Major Restrictions:

States with major restrictions still have far reaching stay at home orders in place and do not allow non-essential travelers at this time.

New TSA Guidelines:

As U.S. air travel begins to slowly reopen, we’re seeing more and more non-essential travelers at the airport. While air travel will continue to be a novel experience over the next weeks and months, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is instituting new guidelines and updates to its security process in order to protect travelers and TSA employees.

  • Travelers will now be allowed to bring up to 12 Oz of liquid hand sanitizer through TSA Checkpoints (superseding the previous 3.4 Oz rule).
  • Travelers will now scan their boarding passes themselves, rather than handing them to TSA agents.
  • TSA checkpoints will institute social distancing measures to allow for an appropriate amount of space between travelers.
  • Travelers will be encouraged (but not required) to wear a mask while passing through TSA checkpoints. You may be asked to remove your mask to allow for visual confirmation of your identity.
  • Travelers will need to place any carry-on food into clear plastic containers and place into bins separately from their bag.
  • Anytime a traveler has a prohibited item in their carry-on luggage, they will be directed outside of security to remove the item, preventing TSA officers from needing to inspect and touch the contents of the luggage.

The Fairmont San Francisco

Hotel Snapshot

Guests arrive at the Fairmont San Francisco feeling like they have just walked into an American Palace. The old-world glamour of the lobby and common areas are reminiscent of a time past while the contemporary room features cater to the gusts of the 21st century. Stroll the hallways lined with photographs of American icons or relax with a cocktail while enjoying the panoramic view of the city from the hotel’s rooftop terrace and gardens.

Why You’ll Love Ii

  • This historic property at the top of Nob Hill is located at the only spot in the city where each of the city’s cable car lines meet, making the hotel a short ride to downtown, the Financial District, Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf.
  • Take the elevator down to the basement and sip on the city’s best Mai Tai at the famous Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar for an experience unlike anything else. Give yourself a full hour there so you don’t miss out on all the surprises that pop up
  • The property’s proximity to Chinatown allows easy access to all the best hole-in-the-wall dining. It’s only a short walk from the hotel!

As Experienced by River Oaks Travel Advisors

San Francisco is a bustling and eclectic American city. It’s funky and weird and smart and refined all at once. The city has so much history and has changed so much over the years and the Fairmont San Francisco is a property where visitors can experience a little bit of it all. The grandeur of the lobby with a large marble staircase and elegant gold and vintage features make guests feel like royalty from the moment they enter throughout the duration of their stay.

The hotel’s hallways are lined with photos of former US presidents, famous diplomats, and international world leaders. It’s fascinating to walk through them and see the hotel’s homage to so many historical moments.

The rooms are bright and fresh with some classic touches. The hotel’s original main building is home to many of the signature suites and the beautiful penthouse. We like the more modern tower rooms for their extra space and sweeping views of the city. On a clear day you can even see the bridge from some of the top floors!

Guests can depart the hotel for some city sightseeing by foot and enjoy the city’s views as they walk downhill but we advise to take the cable car back to the hotel to avoid the uphill walk at the end of the day.

A stay at the Fairmont San Francisco is never complete without a visit to the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar. The bar offers Asian cuisine, tropical cocktails, and a memorable experience unlike anything else.

Advisor Tip

Hosting a big event? You can rent out the multi-bedroom penthouse suite to host anything from a formal diplomatic event to a wedding rehearsal dinner for a night with no minimum. The staff can tell your guests stories of secret doors and presidential misdeeds while the bubbly flows.

The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco

Hotel Snapshot

With an unbeatable location, fabulous service, and the city’s largest full-service Club Level Lounge, the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco is the perfect home base for your next visit to the Golden Gate City.

Why You’ll Love It

  • While the interior is newly refurbished, the building dates from 1909, giving the entire hotel an iconic presence.
  • With an unbeatable location in the heart of San Francisco near Chinatown and Union Square, the hotel is the perfect base for sightseeing all over the city. Plus, it’s only halfway up Nob Hill, making it easier on the legs too!
  • The Ritz Carlton San Francisco is the only Forbes 5* in the city – after a night spent enjoying the hotel, you’ll understand why!

As Experienced by Agency Owner Dasha Westerfield

From the moment our taxi pulled up to the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco, I knew I was in for a treat. First, the hotel is housed in a beautiful historical building dating from 1909, with a sparkling glamour that you don’t see every day! The bright lobby is lovely, with a gorgeous bar buzzing with hotel guests and locals out for a nightcap. With 336 rooms and 60 suites it would be easy to feel like “just a room number”. However, the exceptional service from check-in to housekeeping makes even the shortest reservation seem like a VIP.

The rooms are luxurious and calming in shades of grey, with plenty of suites and connecting rooms for families. A quick peek out the windows offers the perfect reminder of the city waiting for you to explore, with amazing views of the bay and Coit Tower in the distance. Of course, for the best views you’ll want to check out the Ritz-Carlton Suite. With a prime location on the 9th floor, the large living spaces and dining room offer sweeping San Francisco vistas. Whether you book a presidential suite or an entry level room, every room is spacious with a decadent marble bathroom (and double sinks to avoid any quibbles with travel companions).

While all of the rooms are lovely, the real treat comes when you book a room on the Club Floor. Consider these rooms a hotel-within-the-hotel, with a dedicated concierge team to meet your every need (and then some). Grab drinks at the lounge bar and satisfy even the largest appetite with the four food presentations during the day. However, I recommend saving some room for the incredible San Francisco food scene. Additionally, if your morning requires a caffeine jolt, Club Level guests can indulge in a complimentary coffee wake up call. Yes please!

River Oaks Travel Extras

  • Upgrade to next room category (excluding Club Lounge), if available and at the time of check-in
  • An American Breakfast Credit for two daily, up to $64 including tax (Including Parallel 37 or In-Room Dining)
  • $100 Food & Beverage Credit
  • Early check-in, late check-out, subject to availability
