With a coastline nearly 200 miles long full of white sand beaches and turquoise waters, and a sub-tropical climate that brings a 77°F average temperature year-round, Nayarit is a perfect vacation spot. Whether you’re looking to explore the quaint surf towns that line the coast, to venture inland in search of the area’s unique animals or just to lounge with an umbrella drink on the beach, Riviera Nayarit checks off all the boxes for a great trip!

General Information

MAIN AIRPORT:

  • Puerto Vallarta International (PVR)

LANGUAGE:

  • Spanish, but many people speak English as a second language

CURRENCY:

  • The Mexican Peso, however, the US Dollar is widely used

WEATHER & SEASONS:

  • Nayarit is on the same latitude as Hawaii. On average, the temperature fluctuates in the mid-70s. However, during the warm season, the weather typically ranges in the 90s.
  • The rainy season lasts from June to November, which offers some relief from the heat
  • To avoid humidity we recommend November to May

Riviera Nayarit Destinations of Interest

This glamourous, 1500-acre gated community is home to 6 miles of Pacific Coast beaches along with two of our favorite hotels in the area – the Four Seasons Punta Mita and the St. Regis Punta Mita. With tons of great restaurants, two world class Jack Nicklaus golf courses and many options for accommodations, Punta de Mita is a great option for travelers of all kinds!

Fans of Riviera Maya’s Mayakoba complex will rejoice to discover that the owners are duplicating the community along the Pacific Coast. Mandarina is in the beginning stages of development but the first hotel – One & Only Mandarina – is opening this November. The complex will eventually offer multiple luxury hotel options to complement the stunning private beach and lush jungle hillsides.

Puerto Vallarta is home to the international airport as well as many all-inclusive and big-name hotel brands (like the luxe all-inclusive Grand Velas). Its Nuevo Vallarta and Flamingo neighborhoods stretch along a miles long area of the coast. With cute neighborhoods to explore, many restaurant options, multiple marinas and golf courses and great shopping, this is a wonderful option for many travelers to Riviera Nayarit. One thing to remember – this is the most “touristy” destination on the list, so for those looking to get away from it all you may want to look further afield.

Just north of Sayulita lies a town that claims the title of “Cultural Capital of Nayarit”, San Francisco. This quaint town, lying between the waves of the Pacific Ocean and the foothills of the Sierra Madre, offers travelers a glimpse into Mexican history and culture through the local galleries and museums. Make sure to take time to learn about the traditional Huichol handicrafts of the area. For sports enthusiasts, San Francisco is home to La Patrona polo club where you can take in a match or even arrange for private lessons.

This charming fishing village just outside Puerto Vallarta is a great day trip for travelers in the area. Spend the day wandering the cobblestoned streets in search of the perfect Mexican art to take home, relaxing on the 18 mile beach or, for the more adventurous, kite surfing along the tops of the waves.

The surfing capital of Riviera Nayarit, the boho chic town beach town of Sayulita is a must visit for travelers of all kinds! A visit to the water will find families playing in the white sand while surfers “hang ten” on some of the world’s best waves. Meanwhile the markets, boutiques and art galleries of town offer wonderful shopping and souvenir options and local restaurants abound for a sunset drink or dinner.

Adventurers

Get away from the beach for a day with an ATV or jeep tour in the mountains of Higuera Blanca! Ride along country roads and mountain paths for great views of Punta Mita and the sea, while keeping an eye out for wildlife like wild boars, deer, or Guacamaya parrots. For even more adventure, combine your tour with a high-speed canopy zipline through the jungle.

Art and Design Lovers

You can’t spell Puerto Vallarta without “art”, and the town has a vibrant art scene. Our favorite activity is to walk along the coastal promenade to see the statues and sculptures of the Malecon. These beautiful creations of bronze and stone are from local and international artists, forming an outdoor interactive art gallery.

Foodies

You may be familiar with farm-to-table, but in Punta Mita sea-to-table is the name of the game. Want the freshest meal possible? Set sail into the waters of the Pacific with a local chef to try your hand at spearfishing. Return back to the resort and enjoy a hands-on cooking class to turn your catch into ceviche.

Mexico River Oaks Travel

History Buffs

Head to the oldest part of Vallarta for a walking tour of the historical center. As you explore the cobblestone streets, listen to stories of how the city grew from a humble fishing village to the large city it is today. Make sure to stop at the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which towers above the Spanish Colonial-style streets.

Nature Lovers

A short boat ride from Punta Mita will bring you to the Marieta Islands. This biosphere reserve is home to incredible wildlife famously studied by Jacques Cousteau. Spot turtles, fish, dolphins, and many birds, including the blue-footed booby (the rare species mostly found in the Galapagos). It is also the best place to watch for humpback turtles during the season.

Everyone

Every year, whales arrive in Banderas Bay after journeying from the Arctic to give birth to their calves. These humpback whales are the region’s most faithful visitors, easily seen from December through March all over Riviera Nayarit. Our recommendation to spot them? Go for a short walk on the beach! You may spot a blowhole exploding, a slapping fin, or the most magnificent view of them all: the male backflip.

Trending Honeymoon Destinations 2020

icon

Your first trip as a married couple is a big one, you may have traveled together before, but never like this! We know that every couple is different and that there’s no one size fits all destination for honeymoons, so we’ve put together a list of our favorite trending honeymoon destinations for 2020 to help you find your perfect inspiration!

Ridge Treehouse Room at One&Only Mandarina

1: One&Only Mandarina

First on our list of trending honeymoon destinations is the One&Only Mandarina. The luxury hotel group behind the always popular One&Only Palmilla in Los Cabos opens their second resort in Mexico later this year and it’s a perfect honeymoon location! With its location in the heart of a piece of undeveloped coastline just north of Punta Mita the resort has stunning coastal rainforest on one side and the crystal blue waters of the Pacific Ocean and white sand beaches on the other. This environment inspired the resorts construction and the 104 guestrooms are spread across the property in individual villas, taking advantage of the privacy that space to spread out provides. Our recommendation for the most romantic option, the Ocean Treehouses! Versuchen Sie Plinko XY ich mag es These stunning villas are perched in the trees and have stunning views of the waters below! Even better, each room has an expansive private deck with private pools and a dedicated butler!

Aman Sveti Stefan

2: Montenegro

Despite its small size, Montenegro is packed with majestic mountains, breathtaking beaches and lovely locals! This tiny country, known as The Pearl of the Mediterranean, has been a playground of the rich and famous for many years but the rest of the world is finally starting to catch on! No matter what you’re looking for during your honeymoon, Montenegro can deliver! City slickers can wander the streets of Kotor, Tivat and Budva, beach bums have multiple beach areas to choose from and adventure junkies can spend their time hiking, biking, kayaking and more in the country’s mountainous interior. Although there are already several luxury resorts to explore throughout Montenegro, more are coming soon to this trending honeymoon destination. We’re most excited about the brand new One&Only resort on the Bay of Kotor and the first property of Aman’s sister brand Janu. With a winning combination of natural scenic beauty and luxury accommodations, this wonderful country is poised to be the newest hot spot in Europe! If you’re looking for even more Adriatic charm, a trip to Montenegro is easy to combine with Croatia, Greece or even Italy.

andBeyond Benguerra Island in Mozambique

3: East Africa + Indian Ocean Islands

East Africa with its extraordinary landscapes, engaging indigenous peoples and myriad of animals, is the Africa that most people dream of. This corner of the world has captivated travelers for years and will continue to do so for many more. You may be asking why this destination is on our list of “Trending” honeymoon destinations as it has been a popular choice for many years, but we’re here to tell you that there’s always something new to explore here! Our personal favorite way to see East Africa is to spend several days on the mainland exploring the Serengeti, Masai Mara and Ngorongoro Crater then head further East to the beautiful blue waters of the Indian Ocean! Whether you want to make the trek to the overwater villas of the Maldives, or you want to stay closer to the mainland and explore places like Zanzibar and the coastal islands of Mozambique, there’s a stunning beach for every honeymoon!

4: Antigua

White sand beaches and emerald jungles surrounded by crystal blue waters; sounds like a perfect honeymoon destination right? With it’s 365 white sandy beaches (one for every day of the year!), the stunning Caribbean island of Antigua has everything a glamourous beach bum could ask for! The turquoise waters of the Caribbean surrounding this island paradise are full of wonderful places to snorkel, scuba dive or to just enjoy an umbrella drink in the surf. Outside of the amazing water sports and beaches though, the island has so much more to explore! With an extensive English Colonial history, the island has all the romance of pirates and buccaneers coupled with the luxury and comforts of the 21st century! Relax and rejuvenate after the wedding at Curtain Bluff Resort or Hermitage Bay on the main island, or truly get away from it all at Jumby Bay, an Oetker Collection resort located on it’s own private island just off the coast.

5: Sicily

Italy is a perennial favorite for honeymooners the world over, but so many stick to the classic trip exploring the major cities of the mainland: Rome, Florence and Venice. There’s so much more to see in this engaging European gem! Located just off the ‘toe’ of Italy’s boot, Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and while you may automatically think of “The Godfather”, there is so much here to fascinate everyone from beach bums and adventure junkies to foodies and history buffs! We recommend spending several days in Taormina at Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo or Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea to explore Mount Etna and the surrounding winelands, then venturing over to Villa Igiea to explore the food and wine of Palermo. After a few days in Palermo, end your trip with several days relaxing at Verdura Resort, a stunning Rocco Forte property located on a 1.8 km private beach, to enjoy some relaxation and pampering before coming home!

6: Maldives

This stunning chain of islands located just south of India are a honeymooner’s dream. Picture waking up to a gorgeous sunrise, strolling out to the edge of your overwater bungalows terrace and diving right into the clear blue tropical waters where you’re surrounded by sea life. Later that day, after spending the afternoon out on the water sailing or at the resorts amazing spa, you enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner on the sandy beach. Ah bliss. While the Maldives has always been a top destination for honeymoons, recent and upcoming luxury hotel openings from brands like Waldorf Astoria, Raffles and Capella have brought this destination even more to the forefront.

7: Japan

Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun, and the sun has definitely been rising on this destination over the last couple of years. City lovers should head to Tokyo, where the crowded streets, shining skyscrapers, and tons of restaurants and cultural sights will keep you occupied for days. For culture lovers and history buffs, Kyoto is the place to be. This former capital of Japan still retains its importance as the historical heart of the country and has some of the most historically important sites within its boundaries. For those who enjoy the outdoors and adventure, explore Mount Fuji during the day and enjoy the local hot springs in the evening in Hakone or enjoy some of the best skiing on this side of the world in Hokkaido. These are just a small sampling of the destinations available across the islands of Japan, and with these and many others, this island country is sure to be a trending honeymoon spot for years to come.

Borgo Egnazia

8: Puglia

Earlier in our list we discussed the ‘toe’ of Italy’s boot, now let’s head to the east and the ‘heel’. Puglia encompasses all the things that make Italy a top honeymoon spot to visit: history, architecture, culture, and great food. The cherry on top? It is surrounded by the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, bestowing the beaches along the coast with blue waters that rival anything you could find in the Greek Islands. We recommend staying at Masseria Torre Maizza or Borgo Egnazia in the northern portion of Puglia near Bari. From here you can explore the stunning beaches as well as several UNESCO World Heritage towns located across the peninsula.

9: Argentina

Argentina is a land of many sights, sounds, and adventures. From the streets of Buenos Aires where tango music ripples through the air, to the thundering majesty of Iguazu Falls and the intense quiet of Patagonia and the southern plains, this massive South American country offers so much to explore. We recommend starting off with a few days to explore Buenos Aires from your home base at the Palacio Duhau by Park Hyatt or the Four Seasons. Spend a few days enjoying the culture and city life – there’s a reason this enchanting city is called the Paris of South America! Then head out of town to the rich wine country, Mendoza. Spend a few days at The Vines Resort & Spa, a laid back but still luxe resort from where you can explore the local vineyards. Finally, head off to explore some of the natural wonders of Argentina! Iguazu Falls and a stay at the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas (where you can access the park before opening) is a great option. You can also head south to EOLO and the plains of southern Patagonia. This stunning luxury property is close enough to Los Glaciares National Park that you can explore there, but you’ll still have an incredible sense of being at the end of the world due to it’s location dead center in a 10,000 acre ranch.

10: Australia

Island. Continent. Country. Australia is many things, and the best word to describe this vast island is unexpected. From the red dirt alien world of the Outback and Uluru to the shining blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia is packed with diverse sights to explore. Any trip should start off with a few days to explore Sydney and it’s iconic sights like Harbor Bridge and the Opera House. We recommend the Park Hyatt for stunning harbor views and amazing service. For those who want to get away from it all and explore, we recommend a tour of the Luxury Lodges of Australia. Start off with a visit to One & Only Wolgan Valley in the Blue Mountains outside of Sydney. Then venture south to the island of Tasmania and Saffire in Freycinet National Park before venturing to central Australia and exploring Uluru and the Outback from Longitude 131. End your trip with a luxurious and relaxing stay at Qualia in the Hamilton Islands. This amazing property offers a great home base from which to explore the Great Barrier Reef and coast.

Marfa and Big Bend

Cibolo Creek Ranch

Cibolo Creek Ranch is one of the oldest ranches in Texas, where historical artifacts, art, and antiques combine to create an authentic nineteenth-century atmosphere. Explore 30,000 acres of great outdoors and shake off the demands of daily life to embrace a simpler, more serene way of living! Enjoy a range of activities led by experienced ranch hands, such as walking and motorized tours, viewing of Native American rock art, and opportunities to explore the ranch’s three historic forts built in the mid-nineteenth century by the ranch’s founder, Milton Faver.

Hotel Saint George

This landmark property is steeped in the history and culture of Marfa. The hotel stands on the site of the original Hotel Saint George, built-in 1886 and as you step into the lobby, you’ll see locally-sourced elements and repurposed materials from the building’s 1929 incarnation. Don’t think that the property escaped Marfa’s artist spirit though! All the historical elements are melded with world-class contemporary artworks by local artists or those with ties to the community. The real gem here though is not the property, but the town of Marfa. Get out and enjoy the stunning skies, mountain views, and quirky community!

Conservatorium Hotel Amsterdam

icon

Hotel Snapshot

With a prime location in the Museum Quarter, the luxury Amsterdam hotel Conservatorium offers the perfect base for exploring Amsterdam. Luxury hotel aficionados will love the combination of landmark heritage and forward-thinking design, with a mix of soaring 19th-century architecture and modern glass interiors.

Why You’ll Love It

  • An unbeatable location, adjacent to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk Museums
  • The hotel’s Tunes Bar offers some of the best Gin and Tonics in Amsterdam
  • As a historic building, every room is unique and many are duplex-style

As Experienced by Travel Advisor Samantha Collum

There’s nothing like arriving to a beautiful new hotel after a long day of travel. Entering the luxury Amsterdam hotel Conservatorium is like walking into a (tastefully designed) dream. First, staff sweep your luggage away as soon as you exit your taxi. Then the doors open automatically to a brightly lit lobby featuring an old-meets-new design: original brick walls and stained glass windows mixed with cheeky art and modern glass. The lobby lounge feels more like a chic living room, with musicians playing almost nightly and tying in to the hotel’s music conservatory background.

The sense of arrival continues in the contemporary-styled rooms, with the historic nature of the building making each one unique. Notably, the “I Love Amsterdam” suite with its rooftop terrace offers a real “wow factor”. Many of the guest rooms are laid out as duplexes, offering a decadent “splurge” feeling without the higher pricetag of a signature suite. However, my favorites are on the top floor with their high ceilings, wooden beams, and views over the city. No matter the category, all rooms are thoughtfully-designed with touches like espresso machines, complimentary smartphones, and spa-like bathrooms.

Above all, my favorite aspect of the hotel is the service. From the front desk team to the housekeeping staff, every interaction is attentive but unobtrusive, exactly what I expect and love on vacation. The concierges are quick to assist with hard-to-obtain and unique reservations (like the secret bar The Butcher). I recommend asking them for a complimentary bike and map to explore Amsterdam like a local.

Last, but certainly not least, is the incredible spa. Weary travelers will love the 1000 sqm Akasha Spa, with its private Hammam, pool, treatment rooms, and the best equipped gym in Amsterdam. Not to mention, the yoga and pilates classes offered definitely come in handy after indulging in too many courses at Taiko Restaurant!
River Oaks Travel Extras

  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
  • Full breakfast daily, for up to two guests, in restaurant
  • $100 USD Hotel credit to be utilized during stay

A Room With a View: Best Hotel Views Worldwide

icon

If you’re searching for a destination that combines old-world charm with modern sophistication, Antwerp deserves a spot on your travel list for 2025. The vibrant Belgian city, often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors like Brussels or Bruges, offers a unique blend of history, culture, and style—and it’s still delightfully under the radar for many travelers.

Europe: Paris – Le Meurice

Paris, the city of lights. While this nickname originally appeared because of Paris’ early adoption of electricity, it’s still just as appropriate today as the city sparkles after dark. The iconic structure of Paris, The Eiffel Tower, even has a special light show each evening. One of the most amazing views of this twinkling city is from the Belle Etoile Penthouse, the crowning glory of Le Meurice in the 1st Arrondissement on the Right Bank. The penthouse’s expansive terrace provides an uninterrupted view of Paris from all directions. The Tuileries Gardens are your front yard, the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, Sacré Coeur and the Eiffel Tower are all visible as you stroll through your own private garden. All in all, this is a place to feel inspired and delighted by the enchanting city of lights, maybe even a place to kick off your shoes and dance among the stars.

Africa: Cape Town – The Silo

Rising above Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront like a cathedral celebrating South Africa’s emerging modern art scene (or perhaps like the modern art equivalent of the old grain elevator that it truly is), The Silo hotel’s many faceted windows glisten and reflect the scenes of the bustling city below. This striking boutique hotel (recently voted the best in the world) has only 28 rooms, each with its own individual design aesthetic and each boasting stunning views of the city, harbor or Atlantic Ocean.

The most breathtaking views though must be the ones visible from the three walls of windows in the Penthouse suite at the apex of the hotel. This one bedroom suite boasts the best versions of all of the hotels views! The bedroom overlooks Signal Hill and Lion’s Head, the lounge overlooks Table Mountain and you can gaze at the V&A Waterfront, Harbor and Atlantic Ocean from the comfort of you bubble bath in the bathroom’s enormous soaking tub. Bubble baths, bubbly wine and a beautiful view out a bubble shaped window, what more could you ask for?

Asia: Shanghai – The Peninsula

Shanghai is known as the Pearl of the Orient or the Paris of the East, and for good reason. There are few cities that can evoke the same sense of excess and glamour while still maintaining its sense of history. While the city’s historic districts, the French Concession, the Bund and others are stunningly maintained and are beautiful in their own right, the real star of Shanghai is the modern metropolis across the river, Pudong. This city within the city is filled with modern marvels of engineering; Shanghai Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center, Jin Mao Tower and the iconic Oriental Pearl TV Tower whose steel and glass glitter in direct contrast to their counterparts across the river, the historic buildings along The Bund.

For the best views of this, the new Shanghai, one must spend time within the old by strolling or staying on The Bund. One of the best options for this is The Peninsula Shanghai. Situated in one of the only new buildings along The Bund, The Peninsula offers some of the best views across the river and they have River View rooms in almost all categories, no need to book a suite here! Our recommendation, step into the hotel’s Michelin starred restaurant, Sir Elly’s for dinner then continue your evening on the expansive rooftop terrace of Sir Elly’s Bar with a nice martini and a panoramic view of the skyline after dark.

North America: Washington DC – The Hay Adams

Washington D.C., a monumental city whose corridors resound with power, both current day and historical. Despite its compact geography, this first city of the United States if filled with monuments to our history and those people who have shaped it. The Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol Building, the National Mall and even the Smithsonian Institution are well known landmarks of our capital city, but none of these immediately call to mind Washington D.C. in the same way as the Washington Monument and The White House. While many hotels in Washington D.C. can claim stunning views of the Washington Monument and other famous sights in the city, only one can claim a White House and Washington Monument View, The Hay Adams.

The hotel originally began life as the homes of two of Washington’s elite, John Hay and Henry Adams (yes of THOSE Adams!), who along with their wives often hosted the who’s who of Washington. Throughout its long and storied history, first as a private home, then hotel, embassy and again hotel, the Hay Adams has carried on this legacy of being the place to see and be seen in Washington. While the downstairs rooms provide the opportunity to sight senators, congressmen and other power players in the political scene, the real sight is upstairs in one of the White House View rooms. While the normal White House View rooms do give the occupant a stunning view of the stately home, the best views are available from the aptly named Presidential and Federal Suites. If you are fortunate enough to elect the Federal Suite as your headquarters while exploring the city, we recommend having breakfast set up on your private terrace overlooking the White House Lawn. Maybe you’ll even see the famous occupant.

South America: Patagonia – Explora Patagonia

In a bit of a departure from our previous entries on this list, our pick for South America is not a city hotel, but rather a rustic, modern retreat set in the middle of Torres del Paine National Park in southern Chile. Patagonia is a land of ruggedly beautiful landscapes, undulating steppes and sparkling glacial lakes and ice fields. The only 5-star hotel located within the national park, Explora Patagonia is perfectly situated to take full advantage of these views and the unique access that their location provides. Their location inspired the overall design aesthetic, striving to link man and nature and to disconnect their guests from the outside world, if only for a short while. By using natural materials such as local hardwoods and stone, and by placing massive floor to ceiling windows throughout the property, they truly succeed in bringing the outside in.

However, the real stars of the hotel are the expeditions led throughout the park by Explora’s expert guides. Whether you are looking to hike The W Trek or to gallop across the plains with a gaucho, there is something to match everyone’s tastes. While every one of the 49 rooms in the hotel has a stunning view, we recommend the Cordillera Paine Rooms or the Exploradores Suites. These rustic but chic rooms both feature wall to wall windows with stunning views of the Cordillera Paine mountains. Their design allows guests to take advantage of the privacy and silence of the expansive landscape and to rest and renew after a long day of exploration.

Australia: Sydney – Park Hyatt Sydney

When people are asked to name an iconic view, one that always ends up on the list is the white, shell-like exterior of the Sydney Opera House rising above the dark waters of Sydney Harbor. Our favorite view of this icon comes from the grounds, restaurant and (of course!) the rooms at the Park Hyatt Sydney. Perfectly situated between the Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge, the hotel enjoys expansive views of Sydney Harbor and its multiple icons, not to mention the superb level of service and beautiful design. When it comes to the room with the best view, you’re spoiled for choice here. With Opera House Views or Harbor Views available in every category and stunning suite options like the Sydney Suite, there’s a room and view for everybody. Want to double your views? Enjoy dinner in The Dining Room, the hotel’s lovely waterfront restaurant that routinely makes the list as the best restaurant views in Sydney.

Antarctica: EVERYWHERE – Le Commandant Charcot

Were you wondering how we were going to include a hotel room for Antarctica? Well, we’re not! Our choice of best room with a view in Antarctica is actually a stateroom with a view. Our personal recommendation is Ponant’s new ship, Le Commandant Charcot, which hits the water in 2021. This ship is specially built to explore the polar regions and is equipped with a super-efficient hybrid engine that minimizes the environmental impact. Don’t think that this is going to lessen the level of luxury inside the ship’s hull though, Ponant has outdone themselves with the design of the ship and has created a warm and comfortable setting inside to combat the chilly waters that they sail.

While there is not a bad choice of cabin on board (all 135 staterooms have private balconies and panoramic windows), the best view is from the newly conceptualized Panorama Bar. The aptly named watering hole is located on the top deck and in the bow of the ship, and thus commands the most impressive views of the landscape through its curving wall of floor to ceiling windows. Go ahead and save us a seat (and a cocktail!) near the window, we can’t wait to join you on board!

You’ll enjoy time at the pool or spa while the kids study, before spending quality family time together in your home-away-from-home or going for after dinner walks along the shore. Sounds like a fun “schoolcation” experience for everyone!

Ranch at Rock Creek, Montana

Enjoy wide open spaces in Big Sky country while you work AND play! Nestled in one of Montana’s most pristine valleys, The Ranch at Rock Creek encompasses 6,600 acres, so there is plenty of room for social distancing! Balance Western adventure with lavish all-inclusive amenities – for “after school” activities, go horseback riding, sapphire mining, fishing, and more. Plus, parents needing some relaxation can luxuriate at the signature Granite Spa or take a private meditation class along the banks of Rock Creek. This schoolcation sure beats home anyday!

Terranea Resort, California

While an easy 35-minute drive from LAX, you’ll feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle as you explore the 102-acre resort. Montage Palmetto Bluff

Montage Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina

Visit South Carolina’s Lowcountry with a stay at the Montage Palmetto Bluff! The resort is set within a 20,000-acre community between Hilton Head Island and Savannah, giving families plenty of space to social distance and explore. Check in to one of the private house options, many with home office setups, so you can enjoy all of the comforts of homeschooling with a nice change of scenery! For more “hands on” learning, kids can go fishing, search for local wildlife, or hike the many trails through the nature preserve. Plus, they’ll love getting to meet the English Labrador retrievers that serve as the resort’s canine ambassadors!

Commodore Perry, an Auberge Resort

Want a change of scenery but trying to stay close to home? Visit the cool new kid on the block with a stay at the new Commodore Perry in Austin. Kids tackling algebra and parents wading through emails can do so in the many quiet spaces throughout the Mansion, or pick a shaded spot along the Loggia for poolside work. To break up the day, have the staff create a picnic lunch to enjoy at one of the city’s parks – sure beats a typical recess break! Plus, you won’t have to worry about planning out dinner, and can instead end the school day with a mocktail for kids and a slightly stiffer drink for parents while waiting on a table at Lucie’s!

The Palms, Turks & Caicos

Travel to Turks & Caicos is now open, and we’re ready to pack our bags! For families looking to work and play, you can’t beat the service and location of The Palms. Set upon Grace Bay Beach (one of the world’s most beautiful!) this all-suite resort offers plenty of one, two, and three bedroom suites, all with views of the lush gardens or turquoise ocean. You can enjoy the on-site restaurants, or take advantage of the full kitchens to have a “home” cooked meal together after a long day taking classes by the beach. For after-school fun, take out the complimentary Hobie Cat sailboats and kayaks, or get in a round of tennis at their courts. Plus, your River Oaks Travel advisors can get you 25% off for multi-bedroom suites for your schoolcation before December 18th!

Esperanza, Los Cabos

When you’re dreaming of sparkling seas and white-sand beaches, head to Esperanza in Los Cabos! Whether you’re taking the kids for a long weekend or looking for an extended escape, the staff is ready to spoil you in one of their 32 villas. Large floor plans mean plenty of space for schooling and work, though you may be tempted to spend all day at the pool on your private patio. Have the resort chef prepare dinner to enjoy from the comfort of your villa, or book at table at the open-aired Cocina del Mar overlooking the Baja coast. Looking for more activities for the kids? The team can create custom experiences from poolside movie nights to pinata parties.

Edgewood Tahoe Resort, Nevada

Looking to beat the heat for your schoolcation? Why not head to North America’s largest alpine lake and check in to Edgewood Tahoe Resort? Break the monotony of the school day with a dip in the pool or hike around the Sierras, before ending with a (socially distanced!) s’more around the fire pit. Let the kids learn astronomy with a guided star tour at night, or get some energy out with a kayak trip along the crystal-clear lake. Parents can also enjoy the getaway, from spa treatments to rounds at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

Presidente InterContinental Cozumel, Mexico

With United offering nonstop flights from Houston to Cozumel every Saturday, you can be lounging (or schooling!) poolside before lunch. A great schoolcation needs a great resort, and we have you covered with our friends at the Presidente InterContinental Cozumel. Check in to one of their newly-renovated rooms or suites, all with spacious balconies and some with direct access to the beach. Bring the kids’ laptops to a private cabana so they can learn while you relax, or take some time off to go snorkeling in one of the world’s largest reef systems.

Consider a Custom Road Trip!

Sometimes distance-based learning doesn’t compare to a hands-on education, so why not take the kids for an educational road trip? See history come alive on the East Coast, from Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell to a socially-distanced walk along Boston’s Freedom Trail. Or get a geology lesson with privately guided tours of Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, or the Grand Canyon. No matter where your family’s interest lies, our team of expert travel advisors can help you design the perfect educational road trip while maintaining your safety and comfort.

Getting Restless? Go Domestic! Our 5 Tips for Picking a Domestic Destination

icon

Is anyone else quaran-tired?! As we all grow bored of being stuck at home, we’re seeing more and more travelers reaching out to plan their next getaway.

While it may be a little harder than normal to plan an international trip, our domestic destinations are ready to shine! Until borders reopen and international regulations relax, we expect to see a surge of travelers satisfying their wanderlust by traveling within our beautiful USA.

For those clients who are ready to start traveling ASAP, we’ve put together 5 tips for picking a domestic destination for your next adventure. Have a destination in mind already? Check out our overview of state regulations and openings, plus updates to TSA regulations. You can think of this as your Domestic Travel FAQ!

Europe: Paris – Le Meurice

Make sure you know the requirements for self-quarantine

While many destinations are now allowing travel across their borders, that doesn’t mean that everything will be open. Restaurants, beaches, and attractions in certain places could still be closed, leaving you quarantined in a hotel room instead of your home. Check out our overview below of which states have the most relaxed travel regulations.

Consider choosing a destination with lots of options to get outdoors

Many states and local governments have restrictions in place on restaurants, retail spaces and attractions… but not on the outdoors! Try to pick a domestic destination with lots open parks, beaches or trails and get outside to enjoy the summer sunshine. Our favorites? States like Montana, Colorado, and Utah.

Make sure that the hotel that you choose is fully open

While hotels are starting to reopen their doors to guests, many of them are doing so in stages. Make sure that the hotel you choose has their pools, restaurants and other public spaces open so that you can truly enjoy your getaway. Not sure what will be open or the safety measures in place? Ask your River Oaks Travel Advisor – we’re in constant communication with our hotel partners to give you up-to-date information.

Consider a hotel room with a bit more space

Fine with traveling but want to be sure you’ll have room to breathe? Many of the hotels that we partner with have stunning standalone cottages, cabins, and villas that your advisor can help you book! Not only will you get some extra space (hello social distancing!) but oftentimes these houses have additional amenities such as kitchens or private pools for guests. Some of our favorite hotels for this are Montage Palmetto Bluff, The Resort at Paws Up, and Blackberry Farm!

Know your airline rules

Choosing to fly rather than drive? Make sure to research the airline that you’re flying with so that you know what their requirements are. Some domestic carriers are only requiring passengers to wear a mask while onboard, while others are requiring them even in the gate area. Worried about airports and social distancing? Consider flying private to avoid the crowds and give yourself the most stress-free travel situation possible! Ask us about private jet options for your summer vacation – our travel team can help you determine if it’s a good fit for you.

Horseback Riding at Amangiri in Utah: talk about social distancing!

Our Guide to U.S. Destinations and Their Travel Restrictions:

Now that we’ve given you a few things to think about when choosing a domestic destination for travel this year, let’s take a look at the various destinations and restriction levels. All U.S. states have begun to ease their restrictions on businesses and social activity, but there are a few different levels of openness to consider. In general, there are three restriction levels for travel within the U.S.: Minor, Moderate and Major.

Minor Restrictions:

In states with minor restrictions bars and restaurants, retail spaces, theaters and other public spaces may be open (although they are still practicing social distancing within these spaces). These states generally do not require a self-quarantine period for travelers from out of state.

States with Minor Restrictions: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Moderate Restrictions:

States with moderate restrictions may have restaurants, retail spaces and other personal businesses open but they have more stringent social distancing parameters than states with minor restrictions. These states may require a self-quarantine period for travelers from out of state.

States with Moderate Restrictions: Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.

Major Restrictions:

States with major restrictions still have far reaching stay at home orders in place and do not allow non-essential travelers at this time.

*For more details on individual states and their regulations check out this link: https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/national/states-reopening-coronavirus-map/

New TSA Guidelines:

As U.S. air travel begins to slowly reopen, we’re seeing more and more non-essential travelers at the airport. While air travel will continue to be a novel experience over the next weeks and months, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is instituting new guidelines and updates to its security process in order to protect travelers and TSA employees.

  • Travelers will now be allowed to bring up to 12 Oz of liquid hand sanitizer through TSA Checkpoints (superseding the previous 3.4 Oz rule).
  • Travelers will now scan their boarding passes themselves, rather than handing them to TSA agents.
  • TSA checkpoints will institute social distancing measures to allow for an appropriate amount of space between travelers.
  • Travelers will be encouraged (but not required) to wear a mask while passing through TSA checkpoints. You may be asked to remove your mask to allow for visual confirmation of your identity.
  • Travelers will need to place any carry-on food into clear plastic containers and place into bins separately from their bag.
  • Anytime a traveler has a prohibited item in their carry-on luggage, they will be directed outside of security to remove the item, preventing TSA officers from needing to inspect and touch the contents of the luggage.

We’re ready when you are

Our River Oaks Travel Team is excited to see the first light of travel recovery as cities and states begin to reopen. We’re also optimistic about the future as our travel industry partners (whether they are hotels, national parks, airlines or the TSA) begin to institute their new policies for a post-COVID 19 world. Whether you are ready to pick a domestic destination now or are planning for an adventure in 2021, we’re here for you and can’t wait to help you rediscover the joy of travel!
