US Travelers Can Now Visit Greece & Croatia

Over the last year, most of our travelers have had to stick closer to home with domestic adventures and Texas staycations. We’ve been looking forward to seeing destinations further abroad reopen, and are so excited that US travelers can now visit both Greece and Croatia! Read below for a quick overview of the travel requirements (and a peak of some of our favorite hotels and experiences), then contact an advisor to start planning your own trip!

Greece Entry Requirements

Greece opened to international tourists on April 19, 2021 (one month earlier than originally planned!). Greece will allow entrance to US travelers that meet one of the following three criteria:

  • Have proof of COVID-19 vaccination
  • Have recovered from COVID-19 and have antibodies
  • Can show a negative PCR test result performed less than three days prior to departure

Your River Oaks Travel concierge will walk you through all of the requirements to enter Greece as part of our travel planning process.

Some of our favorite hotels in Greece:

Mystique Santorini in Greece

Mystique, Santorini

Celebrating the finer pleasures in life, Mystique is sensual luxury on the sun-drenched isle of Santorini. Choose from a selection of suites and villas, each with a sea-facing terrace with sun loungers, and some with outdoor pools and Jacuzzis. With every comfort attended to, from private meals to personalized concierge experiences, you are left only to enjoy the resort. Swim in the infinity pools, then grab a cocktail at Aura. Head to the Secret Wine Cave for a ceremonial winetasting, then dine at Charisma Greek restaurant or ASEA Japanese restaurant.

Mystique Santorini in Greece

Blue Palace, Crete

Escape to the wild beauty and unrivaled island style of a bohemian luxe hotel on a private beach, with incomparable views and crystal waters. Blue Palace, A Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Crete has 251 guest rooms, suites, and private villas. Its lush cuisine, the award-winning Elounda Spa with thalassotherapy facilities, and unbeatable service set this resort apart. Enjoy private boat cruises around the Gulf of Elounda, a barbecue lunch on an isolated beach after snorkeling in turquoise waters, or simply gazing at the island of Spinalonga while sitting around an open-air fire at the Isola Beach Club.

Dubrovnik, Croatia is Open to US Travelers

Croatia Entry Requirements

Croatia is currently open to travelers from the USA! In addition to showing confirmation of paid accommodations or private tour (which River Oaks Travel will arrange!), travelers must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Have proof of full COVID-19 vaccination and second dose received at least 14 days prior to arrival
  • Have a certificate of recovery from COVID-19 within 11 – 180 days prior to arrival
  • Can show a negative PCR test result performed less than 48 hours prior to departure – if staying in
  • Croatia more than 10 days, a rapid antigen test must be repeated within 10 days from initial test
  • Children under the age of 7 can enter without restrictions

Your River Oaks Travel concierge will walk you through all of the requirements to enter Croatia as part of our travel planning process.

Some of our favorite hotels in Croatia:

Villa Dubrovnik in Croatia

Villa Dubrovnik

Villa Dubrovnik is ideally set on the cliffs of Saint Jacob’s District with direct stunning views of the Adriatic and historical city, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Unique 56 residences offer sea or city views and all have private balconies. Easy access to the city and isolated position is a plus for this hotel. Enjoy the ambience and sunsets on the rooftop bar. Indulge in Mediterranean cuisine at Michelin recommended Restaurant Pjerin or Al Fresco Bar Giardino. Relish the breeze in the indoor/outdoor pool and seaside terrace or beach club. Soothe your soul at the lavish Villa Spa or at the contemporary gym.

Hotel Monte Mulini

You’ll find plenty to love along Croatia’s heart-shaped Istrian Peninsula – beginning with Hotel Monte Mulini. Set atop a small hill overlooking the Adriatic with the Punta Corrente forest as a backdrop, the hotel affords gorgeous views from all 113 rooms and suites. Its 4,200-square-foot poolscape dazzles with four distinctive pools surrounded by lush gardens; claim a plush lounger, follow the hydro-circuit, or belly up to the pool bar. Go kayaking and paddleboarding, get a gold-infused facial, sip a gin and tonic in the cozy gin library, and take a seat at the chef’s table in the Wine Vault restaurant.

South Africa

South Africa: Two Oceans, Three Capitals, Countless Opportunities for Adventure

Known For: The Big Five, Great White Shark Diving, World Class Wines, Adventure

Black rhino silhouetted against the setting sun, mountain ranges rising above cosmopolitan cities, countless stars gleaming in a desert sky, the waves of two oceans crashing along powdery beaches – South Africa is a country filled with diverse sights and landscapes to discover. Whether you’re looking to stroll along Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront before sitting down to dinner, explore the vineyards carpeting the hills and valleys of the Winelands, dive with Great White Sharks off the coast or trek through the wilderness in search of the Big 5, there’s a life changing experience to be found for every type of traveler – let’s find yours!

General Information:

Main Airports:

  • Cape Town International Airport (CPT)
  • O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB)

Capital City:

  • Praetoria
  • Bloemfontein
  • Cape Town

Currency:

  • South African Rand

Weather and Seasons:

  • South Africa is a year round destination but the summer months of November to March are the high season for tourism.
  • The shoulder season of April to May and September to October provide great value for travelers in addition to some of the best weather throughout the year.
  • Even the winter months of June to August bring benefits. During this time the vegetation is less thick, so game viewing is better than ever.

Who it’s great for:

Family Vacations

South Africa offers families of all ages a fun (and educational!) vacation! Spend time in Cape Town exploring history, drive the Whale Coast in search of the Marine Big Five or spend a day learning about conservation efforts while keeping an eye out for elephants!

South Africa is one of our favorite destinations for a romantic trip! Start off a trip with a few days in the Cape Winelands taking in stunning views and world class wine tastings. When it’s time to start searching for the Big Five, choose a tented camp for some old school romance – many even offer private plunge pools!

There’s a very rich art history in the South African culture and our favorite stop for design lovers is Cape Town. We recommend staying at The Silo where the modern design of the hotel will take your breath away! Then head out into town in search of inspiration, from the colorful homes of the Bo-Kaap and Woodstock neighborhoods, to the V&A Waterfront lined with quaint local shops and the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa – there’s something for every art lover!

South Africa is an adrenalin junky’s dream! With excursion options like cage diving with Great White Sharks in Cape Town, helicopter tours over the Cape Winelands, or even helping to track down a black rhino for a medical checkup – there are adventures to be found around every corner!

Advisor Tip

While the “Big Five” are a huge part of any trip to South Africa, there’s so much more to discover here! For a shorter trip we recommend spending some time in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands in addition to your safari. If you’ve got time for a longer trip then head out on a road trip along the Garden Route for stunning scenery, great beaches, and the Marine Big Five.

Destination Guides

Ready to dive in? Check out our in depth destination guides below for recommendations on activities, hotels, and more in some of South Africa’s most popular areas.

Cape Town

With Table Mountain guarding its back and the Atlantic Ocean lapping at its feet, Cape Town is an enchanting city that calls out for travelers to explore its vibrant streets. Located on the southwestern coast of South Africa, Cape Town is one of the three capital cities of the country and is also the most visited by travelers.

Cape Winelands

Only 40 minutes outside Cape Town but feeling a world away are the Cape Winelands, an area home to amazing accommodations, gorgeous gardens, and out of this world wineries. By venturing outside the city, you open yourself up to a whole new set of sights and experiences.

Cape Whale Coast

This 90 mile stretch of coastline to the east of Cape Town offers up some of the most pristine landscapes in South Africa and arguably the best whale sightings in the world. With its location only a short drive from Cape Town, Hermanus is a great home base for travelers to explore the “Serengeti of the Seas”.

Garden Route

For travelers looking to explore at a leisurely pace, the Garden Route must seem a godsend! This 300 kilometer stretch of coastline between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth offers scenic sights, animal encounters and beautiful beaches galore.

Kwa-Zulu Natal & Durban

KwaZulu-Natal offers an eclectic mix of contrasts to every visitor – with mountains, savannahs and stunning beaches galore, not to mention the sparkling cities and authentic tribal settlements – the Zulu Kingdom offers plenty to keep a traveler busy!

Greater Kruger

Journey to “Land’s End” where the crystalline blue waters of the Sea of Cortez meet the golden sand beaches and rusty desert of the Baja Peninsula. Come explore the bustling streets, stunning beaches and natural wonders of this glamourous paradise.

Madikwe Game Reserve

Between the Pacific Ocean and the Western Sierra Madre Mountains lies a pure treasure — Riviera Nayarit! With a coastline nearly 200 miles long full of white sand beaches and turquoise waters Nayarit is a perfect vacation spot.

Johannesburg

The verdant jungles and crystaline blue waters at the southern end of the Yucatan peninsula are home to one of Mexico’s most popular destinations – Riviera Maya! With hot spots like Tulum and Cancun and luxe retreats like Mayakoba, this is a perfect destination for a getaway!

Our Favorite Hotels in Costa Rica

1. The Silo – Cape Town

This eclectic gem of a hotel may not look too lavish from the exterior (it is built in an old grain silo after all), but you know what they say – don’t judge a book by it’s cover! Once you step inside this landmark property the lush furnishings and chic design welcome guests to stay and enjoy themselves while the hotel’s signature pillowed glass windows sparkle like a jewel box in the sky!

2. Singita Sabi Sands

Set along the banks of the Sand River in Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Singita Sabi Sand offers guests exclusive access to this protected part of South Africa, known for high concentrations of big game.  Singita Sabi Sand offers every traveler a world class safari experience with fine dining, wines, and white glove service, alongside phenomenal daily activities and game viewing. With 3 lodges to choose from (including a private use villa) there’s a perfect lodge for every type of traveler.

3. Shamwari Private Game Reserve

A stay at Shamwari Private Game Reserve is one that will remain with you forever. Located in the heart of the Eastern Cape, the reserve offers abundant wildlife, fauna and flora exclusive to the area and unforgettable encounters with nature. Plus with 7 lodges; each providing distinct experiences from exclusive tranquility, effortless family enjoyment or the back-to-nature appeal of a luxury tented camp – there’s an option perfect for every traveler!

As stated on the Conde Nast Traveler’s website, specialists (like those at River Oaks Travel!) are the ones to call to pull off the impossible and spare you the logistics.

To be named to the Conde Nast Traveler’s Top Travel Specialists 2021 List is an incredible honor, one that means even more to us this year as we help our travelers navigate planning in the age of COVID-19. We’ve always believed that our expert travel agency team is the best in Houston, and we’re thrilled to receive this recognition!

What sets our offerings apart from those of other travel specialists?

While every advisor at our travel agency is an expert in creating custom vacations, we are proud to have two in particular featured as Conde Nast Traveler Top Travel Specialists for 2021!

Dasha Westerfield Conde Nast Traveler Top Travel Specialist

Daria Westerfield

“In terms of tangibles, I offer my clients negotiated rates and additional perks, ranging from breakfast included to unique complimentary excursions. Some are a result of my membership with the Virtuoso consortia, while others I’ve personally negotiated with long-term travel partners around the world.

However, it’s the intangibles that I feel set me and my company apart. When designing a trip, I can offer clients superb travel guides (most personally vetted by myself and my team) and insider experiences, ranging from sold-out event tickets and sought-after dining reservations to after-hours tours at museums and exclusive access to fashion hours.

More than that, I also try to combine iconic sightseeing with experiences unique to the destination. Anyone can check a city off their bucket list, but life-changing trips come when travelers allow me to take them to spots off-the-beaten-path where they can truly experience the local lifestyle.”

Samantha Collum Conde Nast Traveler Top Travel Specialist

Samantha Collum

“Before entering this industry, my background was in biochemistry and scientific research – while very different from travel planning on the surface, the analytical, meticulous and curiosity-driven skills translate surprisingly well to my role as advisor. For example, two couples could reach out with identical trip requests for a Hawaii honeymoon, but my methodical discovery phase allows me to dive into their interests to produce two very different vacations.

Wherever possible, I also like to split stays across different hotels and islands and add a unique spin to a classic activity – like turning a Kauai day hike request into an overnight glamping experience with visits to Hawaiian ruins and petroglyphs. I’ve seen many advisors and tour operators force requests into “cookie cutter”-like itineraries, but I’d rather expend the extra time and effort to create an experience that is one-of-a-kind.”

COVID-19 Travel Guidelines & Resort Testing

COVID-19 Testing & Travel Requirements – What to Expect

The CDC now requires all travelers flying to or transiting through the U.S. from international destinations, including U.S. citizens, to provide proof of either a negative COVID-19 test within the last three days or documentation of recovery from COVID-19. Our travel concierge team is here to help you navigate the process and all requirements for travel! To help you understand what to expect, we’ve created an infographic that outlines the process.

What the new CDC requirements for return travel to the US?

As of January 26, the CDC requires all travelers flying to or transiting through the U.S. from international destinations, including U.S. citizens, to provide proof of either a negative COVID-19 test within the last three days or documentation of recovery from COVID-19.

The COVID-19 test must:

  • Be a viral test (NAAT or antigen) with a “negative” or “COVID-19 not detected” result (test results marked “invalid” will not be accepted)
  • Be taken no more than three days before departure from the first embarkation point
  • Show written proof of the traveler’s negative laboratory test result and include the traveler’s name and other identifying details matching those on the traveler’s passport or other valid form of identification

Documentation of recovery must include:

  • Proof of a positive test result issued at most 90 days before departure (results must state “positive” or “detected” – tests marked “invalid” will not be accepted)
  • A letter from a licensed health care provider or public health official clearing them for travel
  • The traveler’s name and other identifying details matching those on the traveler’s passport or other valid form of identification

Travelers must show written proof of their negative laboratory test result or documentation of recovery before boarding. This requirement does not apply to children under 2, U.S. military personnel, or those traveling entirely within the United States, including the 50 U.S. states, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Some states or territories may have individual entry restrictions in addition to the federal regulation for international travel to the U.S.

Each airline is following the CDC mandate, but have their own procedures regarding test result submission, mask requirements onboard, etc. Ask your River Oaks Travel Advisor for more details!

Destinations within the United States and US territories do not require COVID-19 testing for your return home. Island destinations like Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are a great alternative if you’re looking to visit the Caribbean, or ask your River Oaks Travel advisor for great vacation spots within the Continental US.
