Rather than keep these exciting updates to ourselves, we’ve decided to share these insights with you, our lovely clients, on a monthly basis. New ways to sleep under the stars in Thailand

Tucked away in the jungles of Northern Thailand, Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp has it all: a serene spa, delicious dining and best of all Elephants. Well now we can add another line to the list with bubble tents! We squealed with joy when we learned that the resort has new bubble tents coming to the grounds where you can not only sleep under the stars in total luxury but can wake up and take your sunrise coffee with (literally) the elephant in the room. We don’t know about you but we’re ready to pack our trunks and go see some pachyderms!

World Expos have historically brought us some of the most iconic landmarks and products in the world: 1876 – The Statue of Liberty, 1889 – The Eiffel Tower, 1939 – Television, so we can’t wait to see what amazing new structures, products and technologies are going to be debuted at the 2020 Expo held in the United Arab Emirates. With it’s location between two of the most modern cities in the region, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, attendance at The Expo gives you the chance to explore both. Insider tip: the famed Louvre Museum has opened a satellite location in Abu Dhabi and just like it’s big sister, the architecture is an artwork in itself. Unlike the Paris original, in Abu Dhabi you can get up close and personal with the architecture by taking a kayaking tour through the waterways surrounding the museum.

The Robe of Many Colors

Okay, let’s be honest here. We see so many of the most amazing, beautiful and unique hotels in the world that sometimes they can begin to blend together. However, every once in a while, that one detail jumps out to us and suddenly a property is cemented in our minds. For Schloss Elmau in the Bavarian Alps, that detail wasn’t the stunning views available from every window, the light filled accommodations or even the amazingly attentive staff. These are all wonderful things but the one detail that we all remember is their robes. Yes, that’s right, their in-room robes. They come in 25 colors, not a one of which is white and upon check in you are able to request your preferred color be delivered to your room. All we want to know is… can we get a set in River Oaks Blue?

Explora Mora

If South America is on your Wanderlist then you may be familiar with the Explora family of hotels and their properties in bucket list worthy locations across the continent. In 2020 Explora will be expanding these locations with the advent of a new lodge to lodge journey in Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats. Kate Lawless: Travel Agent’s 30Under30

We are excited to announce that our very own Kate Lawless has been selected as one of Travel Agent Central’s 30Under30 travel advisors for 2019! Kate has been with our agency since early 2018, and works diligently and creatively to make sure our clients have the best travel experiences possible.

In case you don’t know Kate yet (or want to know a little bit more!) we sat down for a short interview to learn more about her top travel experiences and recommendations.

What is the best meal you’ve ever had while traveling?

Ooooh… this is a tough one! I love good food, whether it’s fine dining or street food, so I always make time for a great culinary experience when I’m traveling. While I do love to have a long, leisurely, Michelin worthy meal, I have to say that my favorite meals have always been the more authentic, everyday experiences. One that comes to mind is a meal that I ate many times while living in Bangkok. The apartment complex that I lived in was lucky enough to have a restaurant downstairs and a Thai grandmother that made the most amazing Thai food. When I first moved in and was still familiarizing myself with the area, I ate almost daily in her restaurant as I was too lazy to go to the grocery store and lets be honest, it was better (and cheaper!) than anything I could cook at home. After a couple of weeks of this, her grandson who spoke a little English came to say hello and mentioned that his grandmother loved seeing someone enjoy her cooking so much. I asked him to thank her for keeping me so well fed and a few minutes later she comes out with him in tow to tell me that she will teach me to feed myself. We started off with one of my favorite dishes, a grilled beef salad but by the time I left Thailand a year later, she had taught me to cook not only this but also many of my other favorites. I still cook these dishes today, and my Thai beef salad is one of my husband’s favorite dishes!

You’ve stayed at a lot of luxury hotels – which is your absolute favorite?

Haha I can hear you answering this for me! As our entire travel agency knows, one of my favorite (possibly THE favorite) hotels in the world is Raffles Singapore. I used to stay there quite often when I was traveling back and forth between Singapore and Thailand, and I’ve always loved the sense of history that is prevalent throughout the hotel. The rooms are gorgeous, the location is great and the staff are super attentive! It’s been a while since I’ve been back and with the hotel just now reopening after an extensive renovation, I’m planning a trip soon! What’s still at the top of your Wanderlist?

Hmmm…. This is hard because there are still so many things I want to experience and places that I want to see! I’m taking my first “real” trip to Italy this fall, and that’s a big one for me. I have been to Milan several times, but won’t claim that I’ve been to Italy because I’ve basically seen the airport and a studio downtown! This trip I will have the chance to actually explore Milan as well as Venice, Florence and Rome so I’ll finally be able to claim the destination! I sadly won’t be checking one of my biggest Wanderlist points off my list on this trip, a visit to Modena and Osteria Francescana, but since Chef Massimo and his wife Lara just opened an amazing 12 room “inn” in Modena, I have even more reasons to check this one off soon!

Which destination surprised you most when you visited?

I was recently able to take a trip to the Emerald Isle, and prior to the trip I was so excited for our time in southern Ireland but didn’t really give any consideration to our days spent in Belfast and Northern Ireland. Once we actually arrived in Belfast though, my entire outlook changed! I fell in love with the city as soon as I laid eyes on it and the people are so amazingly nice. There is a wonderful feeling of hope in the city and there are so many things to see: the ancient history of the area, the history and art of the troubled times during the 20th century and wonderful modern museums and exhibits, not to mention the stunning scenery and landscapes along the coast. The best part though is that the food and beverage culture is undergoing a total renaissance so at the end of a long day trekking along the coast, you can look forward to a Michelin Star worthy meal and a great cocktail made with local whiskey or gin.

You’ve lived a lot of cool places – which was your favorite?

I have lived in a lot of really amazing places, so it’s difficult to choose a favorite. That’s like asking a parent which child they prefer (mom and dad, I know I’m your favorite)! I can’t even narrow it down to one so I’m going to go with my two favorites; London and Shanghai! London was probably my favorite overall experience and I still love the city. It has such a vibrancy to it and there’s always something new to see. I recently returned for the first time since I left and it felt like nothing had changed but everything was different! My must do? Stroll along the waterfront for views of some major landmarks and take at least a couple of hours break at the Tate Modern!

Shanghai on the other hand has a very special place in my heart. It was the first city I ever traveled to internationally, the first place I lived away from home and away from my parents, and I thoroughly enjoyed discovering myself there! The city itself has such an interesting personality, it’s a historic city with a thin veneer of modernity, almost like a child dressing up in mom’s clothes and makeup. My favorite area of the city is the French Concession, it’s a warren of back streets and small alleys filled with stunning architecture and fabulous boutiques, art galleries, and cafes!

Five Unexpected SCUBA Trip Spots We’re DIVING to Visit!

We all know that approximately 71% of the Earth’s surface is made up of water, but did you know about 96% of that water is the Earth’s oceans? Entirely new destinations become accessible once travelers set their sights below the ocean’s surface. We’ve put together a list of five unique scuba trip spots around the globe for the intrepid traveler looking for their next big adventure!

Western Australia, Ningaloo Reef

Many travelers are familiar with Austalia’s famous Great Barrier Reef, Earth’s largest living organism; but the less familiar Ningaloo Reef off the coast of remote Western Australia is also teaming with wildlife! Scotland’s Wild West Coast

The ABCs of an Amazon River Cruise

Few places in the world are as isolated and untouched as the Amazon rainforest. From its origins high in the Andes Mountains to its exit in the Atlantic Ocean, the Amazon River winds through lush rainforests and past remote villages across six countries, offering a unique landscape unlike anywhere else on Earth. While remote, travel to the Amazon is surprisingly easy for travelers looking for a new adventure, with several options of luxury river cruise lines to choose from. Start your adventure in Iquitos and cruise along the Amazon and its tributaries, stopping for hikes and skiff excursions to look for birds and other wildlife.

A Amazon River, of course! This incredible river system offers a unique chance to see wildlife and interact with local cultures. Board your river cruise ship and spend anywhere from 3 days to an entire week exploring and learning about this unique ecosystem.

B Birds: if you’re a birder, the Amazon is a dream come true with over 1300 species. Spy colorful macaws and parakeets nesting in the trees, listen for the distinctive call of toucans, or marvel at the unique hoatzins that look prehistoric.

C Cruising offers plenty of creature comforts while exploring one of the most remote destinations on Earth. After a day spent out in the tropical rainforest, retire to your suite for a hot shower in the cold air conditioning, then watch the scenery pass by from the comfort of your king-sized bed.

D Dance to live music with nightly happy hours. The crew is multitalented, and you may be surprised to hear your servers singing opera and your bartender playing the drums. Not too shabby for an impromptu musical evening along the Amazon River!

I Iquitos will be your first stop and serves as the main airport for the Peruvian Amazon. This city is the largest in the world that is only reachable by boat or plane – no roads connect the city to the outside world, so motorcycle tuk-tuks are the main form of transportation around town. Make time to see the Main Square and the Casa de Fierro house designed by Gustave Eiffel!

J Journey more than 600 miles down the Amazon River from Iquitos along tributaries like the Marañón and Ucayali Rivers. Your ship will stay in the main rivers while you adventure ion skiffs down black-water creeks and into flooded lakes in search of wildlife.

K Kayaking is a fantastic way to get up close and personal with nature. The paddles are much quieter than motorized boats, so you can easily pick out the chattering sounds of birds or the creepy calls of red howler monkeys as you kayak through reserves and past floating local villages.

L Lima will be your first stop in Peru before flying on to Iquitos, as it serves as the main international airport for the country. Houston is lucky enough to have daily nonstop flights on United Airlines, making it easier than ever to reach this incredible country and start your Amazon journey.

M Machu Picchu is another iconic stop in Peru, and is easy to combine with a trip to the Amazon! Iquitos is only a short flight away from Cusco, so you can start your day with coffee on the Amazon River and end it with a Pisco Sour overlooking the Sacred Valley.

N Naturalists serve as your daily guides, easily pointing out hard-to-see monkeys hidden in the foliage or listening for the calls of toucans nesting in the treetops. They all grew up along the Amazon River and offer a unique perspective into local life and customs.

O Observe animals in their natural habitat! This is no zoo, so you’ll have to be quick with your camera and binoculars to spot swift squirrel monkeys leaping across branches, or flocks of birds passing quickly overhead. Guides like to say every day is like your birthday – you know you’re going to get a present, but you’ll have to wait and see what it is!

P Pisco Sours serve as the perfect end to a day spent exploring, particularly when paired with onboard live music! This local cocktail is made by blending pisco liquor with lime juice, egg white, and Angostura bitters to create a tart drink perfect for sipping. If you want something different, there’s always local beers onboard too!

Q Quiet mornings spent drinking coffee and listening for macaws may become your favorite part of the day. Wake up before breakfast and make your way to the lounge for a mug of strong coffee and that day’s pastry treat, perfect for sipping on the front deck while going through the many pictures on your phone or camera.

R River dolphins are a common sighting, and you’ll find them playfully jumping behind the skiffs and boats. While the grey river dolphins look similar to those found in the oceans at home, the pink river dolphins are unique to the Amazon and cannot be found anywhere else.

S Skiff excursions allow you to get into the smaller tributaries of the Amazon where larger ships cannot go. Each skiff is staffed by a driver and guide to explain the sites, plus a cooler of ice-cold juices and beers to refresh you in the rainforest heat.

T Tarantulas will likely make an appearance, which may seem intimidating for those with arachnophobia. However, talking with your guides about these eight-legged creatures may help you to face your fears and learn more about these misunderstood arachnids.

U Unique experiences are to be had every day, so you never know what to expect! Enjoy having a feast of a breakfast on the river, go for a swim with pink dolphins in a black water lake, and spotlight caimans on nighttime boat excursions.

V Visit a local village and interact with the Ribereno people who live along the river. Lucky travelers may get to meet the village shaman, who offers traditional blessings and talks about the medicinal plants that serve as a natural pharmacy for the locals.

W Wildlife sightings are the name of the game, if we haven’t expressed that enough! Our favorites include multiple species of monkeys, slow-moving two-tooed sloths, camouflaged anacondas, colorful frogs, swooping fishing bats, and enormous 300 pound catfish.

X eXpedition-style travel doesn’t have to mean a lack of comfort or extreme environments. While off-the-beaten path, an Amazon Expedition doesn’t require extensive training or peak physical shape, and is easy for all ages to enjoy. Plus, the easy travel time from Houston means you don’t have to dedicate weeks of vacation time.

Los Cabos offers many luxury hotels, so I wasn’t sure what to expect when visiting the new Montage Los Cabos. Trust me: you’ll be blown away. The landscape is designed to feel refined but natural, with smooth stone and a fiery plaque to announce your arrival to the resort. By the time you pass the security gates, the front desk staff is already prepared with welcome drinks, cool towels, and your room ready – though with the stunning views from the lobby, we won’t blame you if you linger a while before moving on.

First, the rooms (though they’re all practically suites!). Think desert chic room design, combining clean lines with local woods and art pieces. The ambiance feels residential and luxurious, exactly what you want when needing some R&R! The cherry on top? A lavish bathroom with its outdoor shower and deep soaking tub – perfect for reading a book with a margarita in hand.

While the rooms are lovely, the rest of the resort is equally luxurious and relaxing in design. Looking to get some sun? Pick from three palm-lined pools overlooking the ocean, or lounge in the adults-only spa pool. And don’t worry about dozing off – the attentive staff will move your umbrella to make sure you don’t sunburn. How’s that for service? Alternatively, take a dip in the beautiful Santa Maria Bay, one of the few swimmable beaches in the area.

Five Iconic Golf Courses You’ll Never FORE-get Playing

Golf is one of those things in life that has a very clear dividing line, people either love it or they hate it. No matter your preference you have to admire the persistence that true golfers apply when playing the game they love. They’ll play in the pouring rain, against strong winds, even in the middle of a scorching heat wave and will travel thousands of miles in search of that perfect course and perfect game. In honor of the true golfers preparing to compete in the 148th annual British Open this weekend, we wanted to put together a list of (difficult!) iconic golf courses throughout Ireland and the UK.

One: Royal Portrush – County Antrim, Northern Ireland

Where better to start this list, than with the course that will be hosting the British Open this weekend? With two links courses, the Dunluce Links (the Championship course) and the Valley Links, the club has a total of 36 holes for golfers to try their luck at. The Dunluce Links has hosted the British Open only once before this year, way back in 1951, and was the first course to ever host the Open outside of the Island of Britain. Overlooked by the ruins of Dunluce Castle (which gave the course its name) and with views of the rugged coastline and Atlantic Ocean this iconic golf course is full of tough holes and is considered one of the best links courses in the world.

Where to Stay:

With Belfast only an hour away, we recommend staying in the city to take advantage of the world class food and drink scene that is happening now. Afterall, what better way to review your game than with a whiskey or two?! For those who prefer a modern style hotel, we love The Fitzwilliam Hotel in downtown Belfast, its newly renovated rooms are spacious, bright and very comfortable, it’s walking distance to many local restaurants and bars, AND the cast and crew of Game of Thrones often stayed their during filming of the show! Two: The Palmer Ryder Cup Course – Straffan, Ireland

Moving south into the Republic of Ireland finds our second stop only 30 minutes West of Dublin at The K Club in Straffan. This historic property is home to two Arnold Palmer designed courses, the Smurfit Course a dramatic inland links course and the beautiful parkland course that hosted the Ryder Cup in 2006 (for the first time in Ireland) and is now named for this prestigious event. The real star here is the Ryder Cup Course which since 2006 has hosted the Irish Open and European Open several times.

Where to Stay:

While the two iconic golf courses (and two amazing clubhouses!) right on property are reason enough to stay at The K Club while in Straffan, there are many other reasons to indulge. The property itself is a historic manor house and is full of interesting quirks, artwork and hidden secrets to discover. Outside the main house, there is a world class spa, wonderful dining options, two great bars and over 500 acres to explore including manicured gardens and wild forests. Need a break from the tee box, learn falconry or archery, take a horseback ride through the fields, or spend some time in the River Liffey working on your fly fishing.

Three: Lahinch Old Course – County Clare, Ireland

From Straffan we move west to the Northwestern coast of County Clare and an enchantingly rugged links course that was first established over 125 years ago and is often called “the St. Andrews of Ireland”, the Lahinch Old Course. Lahinch played host this year to the Irish Open, but the tournament that it is truly known for is the South of Ireland Championship, which has been played here since 1895. One quirk of the Lahinch Golf Club is the herd of goats that are allowed to run free on the property. They’ve been here so long that they’ve even been incorporated into the logo of the Club and regulars know to look for the goats when they come to play; if they’re running free you’ll have a beautiful game but if they’re crowded near the clubhouse make sure to take your umbrella because rain is on the way!

Where to Stay:

A 30-minute drive South along the coast from Lahinch will take you to the stunning Trump International Golf Links & Hotel Doonbeg. This luxurious retreat is also one of Ireland’s premier golf destinations with an award-winning course on site and is in easy reach of other major courses on the Southwestern coast of Ireland. Outside of this the all-suite hotel is known for its picturesque setting, private beach and comfortably opulent accommodations, not to mention the warm Irish hospitality that pours from every staff member.

Four: Sunningdale Golf Club – Berkshire, England

Time to cross the water, our first iconic golf course on the Island of Britain is actually a pair! The Old and New courses at Sunningdale Golf Club just Southwest of London, have been described as the finest 36 holes of golf in the British Isles. While both courses are stunning, they play very differently, the Old Course is known for its many large trees and heather growths, while the new is much more open and is great for driving. Both courses have played host to many major tournaments and the Old Course even appeared in an Agatha Christie novel!

Where to Stay:

The charming yet chic Coworth Park is a beautiful manor house set in 240 acres of scenic parkland only minutes from the courses. This small 5-star hotel is truly known for its equestrian program which is understandable with the Royal Ascot races taking place just up the road, but avid golfers will find the accommodations and amenities just as comforting. Five: St. Andrews Links – St. Andrews, Scotland

No list of golf destinations in the British Isles (or even in the world) can be complete without a mention of “The Home of Golf”, St. Andrews. This world-famous links course, one of the oldest in the world, has hosted more British Opens than any other course, and is home to the most famous hole in golf, the “Road Hole” or 17th. With the immense impact that this course has had on the game of golf and the long history of the course, this is definitely one course that every true golfer should play.

From the moment our taxi pulled up to the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco, I knew I was in for a treat. First, the hotel is housed in a beautiful historical building dating from 1909, with a sparkling glamour that you don’t see every day! The bright lobby is lovely, with a gorgeous bar buzzing with hotel guests and locals out for a nightcap. With 336 rooms and 60 suites it would be easy to feel like “just a room number”. However, the exceptional service from check-in to housekeeping makes even the shortest reservation seem like a VIP.

The rooms are luxurious and calming in shades of grey, with plenty of suites and connecting rooms for families. A quick peek out the windows offers the perfect reminder of the city waiting for you to explore, with amazing views of the bay and Coit Tower in the distance. Of course, for the best views you’ll want to check out the Ritz-Carlton Suite. With a prime location on the 9th floor, the large living spaces and dining room offer sweeping San Francisco vistas. A Week with Uniworld River Cruises: The Best Way to See Provence & Burgundy

The inspiration for Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Gaugin, the South of France is as beautiful as any painting. Easily combinable with a stay in Paris or Nice, the regions of Provence and Burgundy are the perfect destinations for foodies, culture buffs, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. While there are plenty of ways to explore the countryside, few are as luxurious as a trip with Uniworld Boutique River Cruises. We recently had the opportunity to sail aboard the S.S. Catherine from Avignon to Lyon, so follow along below as we give you a glimpse into a week with Uniworld!

Day 1: Arrival into Avignon and Embarkation

First, you have to get yourself to the river cruise. If you fly into the closest airport of Marseille, Uniworld includes your transfer to the ship – how nice is that? If you have a little more vacation time, we recommend opting to spend a few nights in Paris instead, then take a quick 3 hour train to the city center and a taxi over to the dock. As soon as you arrive, be prepared for the friendly staff to take your luggage and whisk you onboard. Staterooms are ready around 3pm, so while you wait be sure to grab a nice lunch (with a glass or two of Rosé to start the trip off right!). Then, get your bearings by exploring the ship – while not too large in size, you’ll definitely want to locate the essentials like the coffee station, lounge area, and complimentary laundry room.

Once your stateroom is ready, the staff will show you where you’ll be spending the next seven nights. On the S.S. Catherine, rooms are split along three different decks, with the higher categories towards the top of the ship. Regardless of your room type, expect a wonderfully comfortable bed, spacious bathroom, and plenty of storage space for your clothes and luggage. Set aside some time to unpack – after all, one of the best parts of river cruising is exploring the countryside without repacking every day!

Right before dinner, rejoin your old and new travel companions in the lounge for your initial port talk – the first of your nightly talks, it will help familiarize you with the crew, ship procedures, and itinerary. Then, it’s off to the dining room for a multi-course a la carte dinner with plenty of options for salads, soups, entrees, and desserts – our recommendation is to always order anything that’s noted as the founder Bea Tollman’s original recipe (trust us, they’re great!). Finally, it’s off to bed in your comfy stateroom as you’ve made it through your first day!

Day 2: Arles

First, you have to start the day with another fantastic meal. For breakfast this morning, check out the buffet options but don’t forget you can order off the menu. Our favorite are the made-to-order waffles and eggs benedict, though you really can’t go wrong with anything served onboard a Uniworld River Cruises ship! Arles is probably best known for its association with Vincent Van Gogh – the artist painted over 200 paintings in the city over the course of a year, before his famed ear-cutting incident. In touring around the city, keep an eye out for the plaques showing the real-life inspiration for his paintings like Café de Nuit or L’Espace Van Gogh. The city also boasts a remarkable number of ancient Roman ruins, including an ampitheatre that is still home to Provencal-style bullfights called courses camarguaises – in these events the bulls are not killed, and instead a team of men attempt to remove a crown from the bull’s horn. If you’re in town during one of these events, make sure to keep an eye out for the bull-running in the streets!

After exploring in the sun, head back to the S.S. Catherine to prepare for the Captain’s Welcome Reception and Dinner. One of the two more formal events on Uniworld, this dinner is a great opportunity to get a little dressed up. Enjoy a glass of champagne at the reception, then ask the onboard sommelier to explain the red and white wine pairings at dinner (on Uniworld, it’s all included!). There’s usually live entertainment available after the meal, or retire to the Leopard Bar at the back of the ship for a nightcap before bed.

Day 3: Avignon

While you embarked your Uniworld ship in Avignon, you probably didn’t have the opportunity to see much of the city, so the ship moves back upriver today so you can see this fascinating town. If you’re feeling tired from the events of the night before, order the complimentary room service for breakfast (and place a daily coffee order from your butler if you haven’t already!). Then set off on a walking tour into the walled city.

Avignon is most famous for its walled ramparts as well as for being home to the Palais des Papes or Palace of the Popes. This UNESCO World Heritage Site served as the papal residence during the 14th century, and its daunting fortifications are certainly worth the tour! Also of interest are the surviving arches of the Pont d’Avignon and the Avignon Cathedral, though make time to stop in one of the many cute stores or pastry shops that line the streets!

Uniworld is known for having “Let’s Go” active excursions available, so this afternoon take advantage of their kayak trip on the Gardon River. You’ll paddle along the clear waters of the river between Collias and Remoulins, past French locals having a swim. The trip ends with a view of the 2000-year-old Pont du Gard roman aqueduct as you kayak beneath – a unique experience not sure to disappoint!

Day 4: Viviers

While many river cruise ports are well-known names, you probably won’t have heard of Viviers before. This village is over 1600 years old and an enchanting place where time seems to stand still. As part of a unique offering by Uniworld, guests can enjoy an exclusive “Village Day” with some of the locals – our favorite is the visit inside the home of a former dancer, where you can then enjoy conversation with the town’s mayor over a glass of Rosé. You’ll also want to make time to visit France’s smallest cathedral for an organ concert – another exclusive experience. There’s also an opportunity to play a few games of petanque, the French equivalent to Bocce Ball.

If you’re traveling in the right season, today you can also experience one of Uniworld’s optional excursions (at an additional cost) to visit the lavender fields. Spend some time taking photographs among the fragrant fields, before taking a side trip over to a truffle farm to learn more about these “diamonds of the kitchen”.

Day 5: Tournon and Tain-l’Hermitage

Today is a wine-centric day, as the twin villages of Tournon and Tain-l’Hermitage are known for their delicious red and white wines. For a more relaxed pace, enjoy a stroll through the towns with a wine tasting and stop at the Valrhona chocolate shop (trust us when we say to bring an empty stomach for the many tastings!).

For a more active adventure to work off all of the delicious Uniworld cruise food, set out a hike through the steepest vineyards on the Rhone. The Syrah vines that produce the Hermitage wines grow on vertical terraces overlooking the river, and today you’ll hike to the top for a spectacular view and discussion of the appellation’s history and practices (did you know all of the work is done by hand or using horses?). At the end of your hike, parch your thirst with some tastings courtesy of the Cave de Tain cooperative.

Day 6: Lyon

Food reigns supreme in Lyon, the epicenter of French gastronomy. Consider skipping breakfast this morning, as your walking tour today will feature plenty of tastings and treats. First, begin a tour through the historic old quarter to learn about the city’s old passageways known as les traboules – these secret shortcuts played a huge role in the resistance against the Nazis during WWII. Along the way, visit some of the many bouchons and cafes serving traditional treats like the pink praline brioche or green chocolate coussins.

Lastly, save room for the crème de la crème of the legendary market Le Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse. Named after the famous French chef, the indoor market features an incredible variety of butchers, fishmongers, bakeries, cheesemongers, and more offering the highest quality ingredients and cuisine. Though your guide will treat you to several tastings, make some time to wander and pick up treats like truffle oil and olive oil to take back home with you.

Day 7: Beaune

Now nearing the end of your Uniworld cruise, dock in the relaxed town of Macon for a trip North to Beaune. This town is known for the iconic Hospices de Beaune with its famous multicolored roof, which still remains a working hospital for the poor of the region. After touring, check out the extensive farmers market filled with local produce, breads, sausages and more – another colorful opportunity to taste some treats and buy last-minute souvenirs. Beaune is located in the southernmost part of Burgundy, so you can also stop in to one of the many wine shops to try their wines made of Pinot noir and Chardonnay grapes.

This evening, you’ll enjoy a Captain’s Farewell Reception and Dinner, a great opportunity to say farewell to your new friends onboard and thank your favorite members of the staff (trust us, you’ll want to take them all home with you by the end!). Be sure to also listen in on the disembarkation procedures for the following morning so you will know what to do in the morning. Pro-tip: do your packing and settle your final bill the night before to avoid a rushed morning.

Day 8: Uniworld Disembarkation in Lyon

Depending on your return flight arrangements, you’ll be assigned to a specific departure transfer time. If you’re lucky enough to get a later flight out or if you’d like to stay in the city of Lyon, you’re welcome to enjoy breakfast and lunch onboard the ship before saying goodbye to the S.S. Catherine.
