Luxury African Safari: Exploring Botswana, Zambia & Zimbabwe with Abercrombie & Kent

icon

This summer, our travel advisor, Samantha, experienced the trip of a lifetime: a luxury African safari through Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe with Abercrombie & Kent. From thrilling wildlife encounters to unparalleled hospitality, this meticulously curated journey offered a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and opulence. Join us as we relive her unforgettable experience:

Zambia: Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma – A Zambezi River Oasis

Our adventure began at Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma, a luxurious lodge nestled on the banks of the Zambezi River. Named after Dr. David Livingstone’s trusted companions, this intimate retreat offers serene tranquility and breathtaking river views. Beyond the stunning scenery, we had the unique opportunity to walk with rhinos, accompanied by the dedicated anti-poaching team protecting these magnificent creatures. We also visited a local village, gaining insight into Abercrombie & Kent’s inspiring philanthropy projects and their positive impact on the local communities. A highlight of our stay was a visit to the magnificent Victoria Falls, a short drive away. Witnessing the “Smoke That Thunders” was truly awe-inspiring. A sunset cruise on the Zambezi, bathed in the golden hues of the African sunset, provided a magical end to our day.

Zimbabwe: Elephant Camp – An Intimate Encounter with Gentle Giants

Crossing into Zimbabwe, we briefly revisited Victoria Falls from the Zimbabwean side, offering a unique perspective of this natural wonder. We found the park on this side to be particularly well-maintained. Our next stop was Elephant Camp, renowned for its immersive elephant experiences. We had the incredible opportunity to interact with rescued elephants, learning about their stories and the vital conservation efforts in place. The comfortable tented suites, some featuring star beds for sleeping under the African sky, added to the unique charm of this experience.

Botswana: Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero – Cruising the Chobe River

Our journey continued overland into Botswana, to Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero, overlooking the Chobe River. Chobe National Park, famous for its large elephant population, did not disappoint. A memorable boat cruise on the Chobe River revealed herds of elephants bathing, pods of hippos, lurking crocodiles, and a vibrant array of birdlife. The fenced lodge provided a secure and relaxing environment, ideal for families with children.

Botswana: Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp – Okavango Delta’s Wild Heart

Deep in the Okavango Delta, we found Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp. This authentic tented camp offered an intimate connection with nature. While the absence of air conditioning might seem daunting, it enhanced the immersive experience. A thrilling game drive rewarded us with a sighting of the elusive and endangered African wild dog, and we were also fortunate enough to spot a cheetah. Evenings were spent sharing stories around a crackling campfire under a breathtaking canopy of stars.

Botswana: Sanctuary Chief’s Camp – A Lion's Roar in the Moremi Game Reserve

Our final destination was Sanctuary Chief’s Camp in the Moremi Game Reserve, reached by a spectacular helicopter ride over the Okavango Delta. The aerial views of the wildlife and landscape were simply stunning. Known as the “Predator Capital of the World,” Moremi lived up to its name with frequent sightings of lions, leopards, and hyenas. One unforgettable morning, a lion strolled through camp during breakfast, a thrilling testament to the harmonious blend of luxury and wilderness that defines Chief’s Camp.

An Unforgettable Luxury African Safari Adventure

This journey through Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe was a truly transformative experience. Abercrombie & Kent’s meticulous planning and attention to detail ensured every moment was unforgettable. Cap Juluca, a Belmond Hotel

Cap Juluca, a Belmond Hotel Review

At Belmond’s Cap Juluca Hotel, barefoot luxury has never looked so good! This iconic resort has graced Anguilla since 1988, when Linda and Charles Hickox fell in love with the location and decided to build the hotel and its (now famous) Pimms restaurant. Fast forward a few years, and Cap Juluca quickly become “the” place to be for jetsetters and movie stars. Spend a few minutes on property and its easy to see why, with its Moroccan-style domed villas and colorful tropical gardens contrasting against the turquoise waters and white sand beach of Maundays Bay.

While the hotel may have a longstanding history, this grand dame has never rested on her laurels. After being acquired by Belmond and LVMH in 2017, $121 million dollars were invested into elevating this Caribbean classic. The rooms and suites still have a beach-chic feel, but with modern updates like private solariums, motion-activated lights, and plugs for every device you’ll hopefully be too busy to use! But while the Cap Juluca may feel fresh and new, the most important features like the views and staff remain unchanged (good thing, too – many of the staff have been around for 30+ years and are treated as family by repeat guests!).

Culinary

The Homestead houses the main restaurant The Grill Room, as well as the smaller café bistro and a bar/lounge all arranged around a central reflecting pond that (like many other places on property) often attracts the attention of the resident monkeys. The Grill Room offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day – we recommend requesting a table in the garden to enjoy the beautiful grounds alongside your meal. Alternatively, the Bistro is an all-day and all-night alternative with a slightly more casual menu and its own pizza oven. Our favorite dish – the corn fritters featuring fresh local produce throughout!

Other On Site Activities

The charming collection of shops on property offer great shopping for all those gifts you need to bring home to loved ones (or for yourself 😉). With options ranging from a coffee shop to a Tanzanite dealer there’s something for everyone but our personal favorite is the Shanga shop. This amazing workshop is dedicated to supporting and empowering community members with disabilities. Through their on-site workshop they create works of art (often from recycled or upcycled materials) for sale in the shop. Make sure to ask for a tour of the workshop during your visit – many of the artisans even give lessons to guests!

Elsewhere on property, near the swimming pool, the Peaberries Spa offers relaxing treatments like massages, pedicures, manicures and more.

Hong Kong To Drop Travel Quarantine

Hong Kong To Drop Travel Quarantine

Hong Kong will no longer require travelers to undergo three days of mandatory hotel quarantine upon arrival, lifting the burden on international travelers to Hong Kong for the first time since early 2020.
The new rules take effect starting September 26. Travelers will only have to undergo three days of self-monitoring post-arrival and an antigen test 24 hours before they board.

The self-monitoring period will include being assigned an amber color code under the city’s digital health code, which limits movement (that self-monitoring will not be allowed in “high-risk premises,” including bars and restaurants)

Japan to Officially Drop Daily Traveler Limit

Japan to Officially Drop Daily Traveler Limit

Starting October 11, Japan is opening its border to foreigners without heavy COVID restrictions. International travelers can enter Japan without being part of a tour group. Japan is ending its international daily arrivals cap and will reinstate visa waivers. The daily visitor cap is currently at 50,000 and had been as low as 20,000 just a few weeks ago.

According to Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Japan’s border control measures “will be on par” with the U.S.’s border measures starting on October 11, 2022
The changes are expected to boost Japan’s struggling tourism industry, which has been held back by strict entry rules, including a near-full ban on new entries by foreigners that was imposed in 2021.

Travelers coming into Japan will be able to take advantage of a weakened yen, which has dropped to its lowest point, compared with the U.S. dollar, in almost 25 years.
